Being a Good Yoga Student
Some tips and etiquette when attending class...- Wear comfortable and modest clothing. Avoid wearing excessive or gangly jewelry. Don't wear heavy perfume or cologne.
- Don't have a heavy meal within 3 hours; don't have a light meal within 1 hour.
- If possible, use the restroom before class.
- Leave cell phones and pagers outside the classroom.
- Arrive early. While waiting for class to start, relax or stretch quietly. Keep classroom conversation to a minimum.
- If you arrive late (please not more than 10 minutes), settle in as quietly as possible. Wait until the class is moving before unrolling a sticky mat. If you arrive in a rush, spend a few minutes quietly centering yourself before joining the class; let your frenzied mind catch up with your body.
- Inform the teacher before class of any physical injuries or problems.
- Sit close to the teacher if you have hearing difficulties.
- Pay attention to the teacher and follow the instructions given. If you don't understand something or have a question, ask.
- Intend to have a beginner's mind - a mind that is open, an attitude of possibility, and the ability to see things as fresh and new. Yoga is self-exploration and self discovery - not an exercise in power and control.
- Honor your body/mind. Don't force or struggle. If you need to rest during class, move into a quiet pose such as child's pose or relaxation pose until you are ready to rejoin the class.
- Don't be competitive. This is an individual journey, and comparing yourself to others misses the point.
- Stay for the entire class. Leaving early, especially before or during relaxation, robs you of one of the best parts of class and can be disruptive to others.
- Put props away neatly at the end of class.
- Sign up early for classes. Please pay on time.
- If you need to cancel, please do so by Friday.
- Foundation I students should not miss more than 1 class in a week and only 2 over the 6 weeks. If you have to miss more, please inform your teacher.
